The Mechanics’ Institute of Victoria (MIV) home page describes its purpose/aims as; ‘Mechanics' Institutes of Victoria (MIV) was formed in 1998. It aims to foster the preservation and restoration of the social, cultural and physical heritage of mechanics' institutes through the development of information exchanges and systems of mutual support. Membership is open to groups and individuals with an interest in the MI movement, particularly in the state of Victoria, Australia’. (Mechanics’ Institute of Victoria, home page 2011).

The Mechanics' Institutes Resource Centre (MIRC) is a database of information about mechanics' institutes, especially Victoria, Australia. The collection of data is an ongoing project over many years of research and is based on information supplied by many significant contributors, that is, Pam Baragwanath, Lorraine Huddle, Peter Pereyra and Professor Wallace Kirsop who has also been a generous benefactor.
The MIRC includes electronic documents and images and paper documents.
A significant project of the MIRC is the scanning of the records of mechanics' institutes in bushfire-prone areas. The MIRC is located at the Prahran Mechanics' Institute History Library at 140 High Street, Prahran.

Pam Baragwanath collection of documents relating to research for the book ‘If the walls could speak’ up to the year 2000
The collection consists of correspondence with mechanic’s institutes (M.I.), hall contacts all over Victoria, articles from local histories, books, newspapers and MI documents, photographs and ephemera. Also included, international research from York Library and the first three mechanics’ institutes in the U.K. – Birkbeck College, London University (London Mechanics’ Institute); Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (Edinburgh School of Arts) and University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (Anderson’s University / Glasgow Mechanics’ Institute).
Archival collection sourced from EBAY
Consisting of MI postcards from Victoria, interstate, UK, US,and Fiji, MI booklets, concert posters, MI Library books, catalogues, objects and artefacts, collected during 2007-8, and purchased by MIV Inc. in 2008 and to be housed in glass cabinets for viewing in the PMI Library.
DNR Survey collection 1988
DNR Survey 1988, data sheets with information from local councils and historical societies and follow up research for the Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment used for An inventory of mechanics’ institutes in Victoria (East Melbourne, Vic.: Dept. Natural Resources and Environment, 1998).
Wesson collection photos and paper document survey mid 1960s to 1970s
Alfred Wesson / CAE collection from survey 1965-1970’s, in Pam Baragwanath’s safe keeping since 1992. Includes 300 photographs arranged alphabetically by place name and survey correspondence. Disclaimer: names attributed to some photos may not be accurate, please check with local historical society for verification.
John Adams newspaper references from SLV 1980s (paper documents hand written)
John Adams Victorian newspapers references to MI’s, by RMIT Dept. of Librarianship students and shared with Baragwanath in the 1980’s.
Project missing collection (scanned 1995 - continuing)
Materials such as Minute Books, Cash Books, Library Accession Registers, letters, bank statements and Annual Reports etc. have been identified and are loaned to Peter for the purpose of ‘Disaster Management’.

Documents, images, etc. both paper based and digitised, sourced from various places and donated by various people.

The relevance of resource findings to the topic of the research project - Mechanics Institute libraries in Victoria
The resource collection at the MIRC consists of information covering newspapers, documents, surveys, objects and artefacts, photos, minute books, cash books, library accession registers, letters, bank statements and annual reports, all relating to the Mechanics’ Institute of Victoria (MIV).

· I am thoroughly enjoying this research and have learnt a great deal about mechanics Institutes.
· I believe I have finally got the Harvard referencing correct!
Discoveries:
· That the MIV have a Mechanics’ Institute Resource Centre located at the Prahran Mechanics’ Institute.
